Ear Surgery
Otoplasty - ear pinning
Ear surgery , also called otoplasty or ear pinning. is the surgical procedure that seeks to place the ears again in a more aesthetically and pleasing position.
It is usually recommended in children aged 5 or 6 years, time when the development of the pinna is almost complete and eliminates the psychological trauma a child might experience in social settings (the classroom). In adults, it can be done at any age.
What can be achieved with an otoplasty?
Otoplasty can change:
- The space of the ears relative to the head
- The width of the earlobe
Who is the ideal candidate for an Otoplasty?
Children or adults, may be unsure about the outcome of otoplasty. Note, that the aim is to achieve an improvement, not absolute perfection. Do not expect an exact symmetry that would even be unnatural.
Usually, these are candidates:
Patients with prominent ears or very separate from the head
How is it done?
For children, it is recommended intervention under general anesthesia. For older children and adults, local anesthesia is used with or without sedation, therefore, you will be awake during surgery, but relaxed.
The technique used in each procedure depends on the nature of your problem and other factors, including your desires and expectations.
If your problem is prominent and protruding ears, an incision behind her ear is done, it reshapes the cartilage in order to place it in a closer position to his head. The incision stays hidden in the natural groove located there.
Since each patient´s case is different, not everyone can get the same outcomes with the same technique, for which, we will assure to choose the best technique regarding your case.
Recovery
The same day the procedure is done, you will be discharged. Will wear a special bandage around your head. Most adults return to their jobs after five days. Children return to school in about seven days, as long as they are careful with physical activities.
